Woods and Finishes

Woods can be polished in a variety of finishes to provide varying degrees of shine, luster and durability. Most wooden pens are available in natural, satin and high-gloss finishes. It is important to note that not all finishes are available in every material.

Natural Finish
Wear Resistance Rating:***

Our natural finish is a finish made of shellac and wax that seals and protects the wood with a low sheen, soft finish. A natural finish protects the wood while maintaining and showcasing its natural beauty. Most pens come standard wtih a natural finish. A natural finish may wear over time and future waxing may be necessary.

Satin Finish
Wear Resistance Rating:*****

Our satin finish is a hard-wearing finish that seals and protects the wood while providing a low-luster shine. A satin finish is more durable than a natural finish and highlights woods beautifully. Due to the extra labor to apply this multi-step finish, there may be an additional charge for this finish in certain materials.

High-gloss Finish
Wear Resistance Rating:*****

Our high-gloss finish is a clear shiny finish that provides a brilliant, lusterous shine to woods that is also extremely durable. This finish provides a gorgeous depth to woods and is simply stunning. Due to the extra labor to apply this multi-step finish, there may be an additional charge for this finish in certain materials.

Straight-grain vs. Cross-grain

Woods can be cut with the grain of the wood or against the grain producing straight-grain and cross-grain pieces of wood respectively. Making pens from these different cuts produces a dramatically different looking pen.

Straight-grain
When the wood is cut straight-grain, or with the grain of the wood, the grain and figure of the wood runs parrallel with the body of the pen.

The Executive pen is shown on the right cut from straight-grain Bubinga.

Cross-grain
Wood cut across-the grain of the wood, or simply cross-grain, positions the grain perpendicular to the body of the pen. Since the wood is then turned and cut round, the grain appears to wrap around the pen. Depending on the wood species, the grain patterns can appear quite dramatic and swrirled when cut cross-grain producing a stunning effect. Turning a pen from wood cross-grain can be far more difficult than simply turning wood straight-grain; therefore, cross-grain wood is only available in specific woods and specific design styles. There may be an additional charge.

Woods & Burls
It is important to remember that wood is a natural byproduct of a tree; therefore, every piece is truly unique in grain and figure. The following samples represent the characteristics of color and grain known to each wood species. If you click on any pen picture next to its wood sample, you will see a variety of pens made from that material. You will be able to see the variances in color, grain and figure. Pictures of pens in the Product Gallery are of the actual pen available for purchase. When you custom order a pen, it will be made specifically for you from a new piece of wood and will be your own design original.

Please Note:
The materials below are ONLY available with the purchase of a custom made pen. Please select only one material per custom pen. If ordering multiple pens, be sure the quantity of materials matches the number of pens. Please use the "special instructions" area of the shopping cart to specify which material goes with each pen.
